The Bench Network Project
Have you ever walked through a park or neighborhood and wished there were a place to sit and relax?
Urban Chat is launching a community project to identify places around Petaluma where simple seating, like benches, could make parks, walking routes, and neighborhood spaces more welcoming.
Volunteers will help explore parks and public spaces around town, documenting where benches already exist and noticing where they might be missing. These small details can make a big difference, especially for older adults, grandparents, or anyone who needs a place to pause and rest while walking through the community.
This opportunity is perfect for students who enjoy being outdoors, exploring their city, observing how people use public spaces, or learning about urban design and community planning.
What you’ll do:
Explore parks and neighborhood gathering spaces
Document where benches already exist
Notice where seating could make a space more comfortable and welcoming
Take photos and share observations
Before heading out, students will learn simple observation techniques inspired by urbanist William H. “Holly” Whyte, who studied how people actually use public spaces. Then you'll head out into the community to see Petaluma through a new lens.
Why it matters:
Your findings will help guide community conversations about where new benches could be installed — helping make Petaluma more walkable, accessible, and welcoming for people of all ages.
