Better Petaluma Film Festival

Each September, Urban Chat hosts the Better Petaluma Film Festival, showcasing films from around the world that explore the built environment—the homes, streets, parks, and gathering places that shape daily life. These stories spark lively conversations about how cities grow, how public spaces thrive, and how Petaluma fits into the future of urban design.

Students are invited to play a hands‑on role in bringing the festival to life.

It’s a great opportunity for students interested in film, design, storytelling, marketing, or event production — and for anyone curious about how the built environment shapes the way we live.

What you’ll do:

  • Review film submissions and help select the final festival lineup

  • Design posters, flyers, and promotional materials seen throughout the community

  • Promote the festival around town and across social media

  • Volunteer during the event, supporting screenings, guests, and festival operations

Why it matters:

  • You’ll help shape a community event that sparks real conversations about how cities work

  • You’ll gain experience in film curation, design, marketing, and event production

  • You’ll build skills in storytelling and visual communication

  • You’ll connect with people who care about Petaluma’s future—and contribute to that future yourself

Sharon Kirk

Sharon joined Urban Chat in 2017 following a spontaneous meeting with Kevin McDonnell at the Petaluma Engagement Fair (sponsored by PCRC). Her interest in Petaluma city planning stems from her years of living in vibrant, walkable cities including San Francisco and Göteborg, Sweden. Sharon assists with Urban Chat promotional activities and acts as co-chair of the Know Before You Grow educational committee. And despite her hesitation as an introvert, she occasionally hosts events.
