Tactical Urbanism for Educators and Students

January 10, 2024

Our first forum of 2024 returns to the subject of Tactical Urbanism! This was a hot topic at Petaluma’s 2023 Better Cities Film Festival held last September and continues to percolate in the hearts and minds of Petaluman's working on making our city a better place for everyone

For those of you new to the concept, tactical urbanism comprises small, often temporary improvements that test if the changes are worthy of becoming permanent and being applied elsewhere. Tactical urbanism is often associated with mobility but can also be applied to land use, parks, and more.

Urban Chat hopes to interest local students in tactical urbanism. Who better to advocate for today's solutions than those who will be here tomorrow?! We’ve assembled a short reel of tactical urbanism films intended for local classrooms. The goal is to encourage student enthusiasm and involvement in our shared future.

At this first forum of 2024, the reel will be shown followed by a discussion with educators about the school outreach effort.

Sharon joined Urban Chat in 2017 following a spontaneous meeting with Kevin McDonnell at the Petaluma Engagement Fair (sponsored by PCRC). Her interest in Petaluma city planning stems from her years of living in vibrant, walkable cities including San Francisco and Göteborg, Sweden. Sharon assists with Urban Chat promotional activities and acts as co-chair of the Know Before You Grow educational committee. And despite her hesitation as an introvert, she occasionally hosts events.
